The Business of Online Business

We've all heard the lines- "Make 20,000 monthly", "Live the Life of Luxury Today"- you name it, people say it in regards to running an online business. Unfortunately, it is not that easy. Achieving any level of success online requires an extensive amount of time and effort. Product research, setting up product lines, distribution, keeping track of inventory and sales, marketing- the list goes on. The more time you put into it, the better the returns. It is really not that different from having a brick and mortar business. Imagine opening a business in your town and you simply fill the place up with inventory and then just sit back and wait for customers. No promotions, no advertising- nothing. I can't say that it will always fail but chances are high that it will.

Many people think that by starting a business online, money just flows in and you simply sit back and enjoy the profits. I heard as much on a radio commercial last night. Business requires work and anyone that tells you that you get rich quick by simply having an online presence is not being honest. The scheme is always the same- send in a nominal fee so that you can 'learn' their secrets to success. I can tell you what their secret is--the thousands who send them fifty bucks for their magic solution. It's nothing new. Way back when people sent in money to find out how to make thousands addressing envelopes in their homes. Of course it wasn't true but thousands would send in money for these scams. Today it is not that different- just a high tech face on an age old scheme.

If you are looking at the world of e-commerce for your product line, by all means go for it. It is fun, exciting and you meet some really interesting people along the way. A combination of hard work and ingenuity can have handsome rewards. Just be careful. As with anything else in life, there are always people who are looking for those most vulnerable with promises of easy money.

Blujay Free Marketplace

I have been selling at eBay for a number of years (on and off) and recently went back to it full time. Having been away for awhile, it is easy to lose track of all the latest developments in the online marketplace 'world'. While passing some time in the eBay chat rooms, I came across this site which offers sellers the ability to open their own online store totally free of charge. No, the traffic at the current time is not the greatest but what can you lose? I have set up my own store site there and will see how it goes. In the meantime, I'm going to search around for other online marketplaces and see what else new is out there.

Songs of Mass Destruction- Annie Lennox

Menacing as they sound, the songs of mass destruction gathered on Annie Lennox's fifth solo disc don't manage to so much as nick the gorgeous instrument she's built her career on. Weaving artfully as ever around the contours of songs that suggest the worst--Lennox is world-wise and therefore maybe inevitably world-weary--she imparts gravity and grace in a voice as cloudless and surface-smooth as just-brewed mint tea; from the tentative beginnings of the mournful "Dark Road" to the gospel-bottomed gorgeousness of "Ghosts in My Machine," she's in full command of her considerable vocal powers. And it's possible she's never used them to such moving effect on a single record. Earlier Lennox or Eurythmics albums might have succumbed here and there to slight-seeming experiments in style, but Songs of Mass Destruction doesn't dilly-dally. All swerves, even playful ones (see "Love Is Blind" and "Coloured Bedspread," a synth-y song that wouldn't seem so out of place on a recent Madonna record), are on-message: "Womankind" busts wide open not only because it needs to (a voice this big can't be contained, it reminds us), but to demo empowerment, and the hopeful "Sing" signs off with a seconds-long African guest vocal. There's an upside to the destruction of cultural wellness that led Lennox to write this record, and it's artistic creation. Songs of Mass Destruction is a sterling, rock-solid, expert example.
